Food/Comida

I just want to confess I am gaining weight because I'be been eating all the things I love while vacationing in my home town; no restrictions. I have been visiting friends and just cooking the yummy things I have missed dearly. One of the things I miss the most is the intensity of flavors. Everything tastes better here. I don't know if it's because I am home, where I "learned to eat", where I learned to love cooking and food, or if there is something real in the characteristics of the foods here compared to the ones in Portland, where I love now. Whatever the reason, it's just a joy. I am most of the time so busy cooking and then eating, I just forget to take pics. of my food.

Solo quiero confesar he estado subiendo de peso porque he estado comiendo sin restricciones todas las cosas que me encantan durante estas vacaciones de visita a mi pueblo natal. He estado visitando a amigos y familiares y cocinando todas las cosas ricas que extrano muchisimo. Una de las cosas que extrano mas es la intensidad de los sabores. Todo sabe mejor aqui. No se si es simplemente que estoy de regreso al hogar de mi infancia, en donde "aprendi a comer", en donde aprendi el amor a la cocina y a la comida, os si es que hay algo real en las caracteristicas de la comida aqui comparada con la de Portland, en donde vivo actualmente. Cualquiera que sea la razon, es simplemente un deleite. La mayoria del tiempo me la paso ocupada cocinando y luego comiendo, se me olvida tomar todos de la comida.

A tragic and sad death. Mr. Rodolfo Torre Cantu was killed this morning. He was the candidate to governor for the PRI political party. I am sadden that this is happening in Mexico. Mexico needs all the prayer we can get.

Una muerte tragica y triste. Esta manana el Sr. Rodolfo Torre Cantu fue asesinado. El fue el candidato a gobernador por el PRI. Me da mucha tristeza que esto este sucediendo en Mexico. Mexico necesita tanta oracion como pueda recibir.

This day could probably be my gastronomical highlight of the trip. I ate the very things that are so unique in my state in the right setting: a wedding! Rice, lamb broth, lamb (which we call barbacoa) and pork. Absolutely delicious!! Of course with different salsas and cactus salad. It was heaven on this pice of earth called Santiago Tulantepec. Another great thing that happened was the fact that I could go because I am bride's relative. I was not invited and the party organizers were not at all expecting me, however that's one of the beauties of of this Mexican culture. Long gone are the days when weddings lasted three days and people were invited even from the street. However, if you are indeed a relative, you can still just show up and be welcomed with open arms. That's what I call Mexican hospitality.
Probablemente, este dia sea el mas sobresaliente de mi viaje gastronomicamente hablando. Comi precisamente las cosas que son unicas en mi estado y en el lugar perfecto: una boda. Arroz, consome de barbacoa, barbacoa y carnitas. Absolutamente delicioso! Acompanados de sus salsitas y ensalada de nopales, por supuesto. Fue el cielo en este pedacito de tierra llamado Santiago Tulantepec. Otra cosa padrisima que paso fue el hecho de que pude ir a esta boda porque soy parienta de la novia. No me invitaron directamente y de hecho ni los novios ni mis parientes quienes organizaban esperaban verme, pero esta es una de las maravillas de la cultura Mexicana. Ya no existen los dias en que las bodas duraban tres dias y todo el pueblo era invitado, quienfuera que pasara por la calle. Sin embargo, si en verdad eres un pariente, aun puedes asistir inesperadaente a las bodas y ser recibido con brazos abiertos. A esto llamo hospitalidad mexicana.

The National Museum of Art, o Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City is located in this amazing building! It was finished in 1911. It was constructed by the Italian Silvio Contri. It is built in a very classical european style, specifically italian and french. This building was originally called "Communications Palace" and hosted the Ministry of Communications and Transportation. It was meant to reflect prosperity and economical stability under Porfirio Diaz's presidency. If you are someone who likes Art History, this is the place to visit. You'll love it!

El Museo Nacional de Arte o "munal" esta ubicado en este maravilloso edificio en la Cd. de Mexico. Se termino de construir en 1911. Fue construido por el Italiano Silvio Contri. El estilo del edificio es clasico europeo, especificamente italiano y frances. Este edificio se llamo originalmente "Palacio de Comunicaciones" y albergaba a la Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes. Se pretendia que reflejara prosperidad y estabilidad economica bajo la presidencia de Porfirio Diaz. Si tu eres alguien a quien le gusta la Historia del Arte, visita este museo. !Te va a encantar!

Two blue frogs/Dos ranitas azules

Today, I was able to go with my nephews to their swimming lesson. I was very glad to get the chance to share with their excitement of being able to put "all their face in the water!" as they pointed out proudly. This is one of the reasons I wish I could live close to my brother, to see the little things that are so big!

Hoy tuve la oportunidad de acompanar a mis sobrinos a su clase de natacion. Me alegro mucho poder compartir con ellos la emosion de que pueden "meter toda la cara en el agua", como me decian con mucho orgullo. Esta es una de las razones por las que quisiera poder vivir cerca de mi herano, para ver los pequenos grandes detalles. 

Traveling alone/Viajar sola

Traveling alone has some advantages. Like being able to wander around the airport stores to my hearts' content while waiting for my connecting flight. This time I found this very cool place at G. Bush International Airport: Clyde Drexler Sports Scene. It is very sharply decorated with all kinds of full size posters featuring Clyde -- of course, doing his cool acrobatic basketball moves. The only thing that's missing is him in his Blazers uniform. As I browsed away, I was missing my husband terribly, imagining how would this walk be with him. I could almost hear Mike's words as I choose to go a little further away from our gate, he wouldn't like it, but still would tag along reluctantly. I often try to "think for him", which he hates, so I won't try except to say that I'm almost sure that the one thing he'd say about this store is how come Clyde's time with the Portland Trail Blazers is not acknowledged here. I don't know, on the one side there's the Clyde Drexler player who had great success including an NBA Championship with the Trail Blazers. On the other hand there's Clyde Drexler from Texas in the GB International Airport promoting everything that's goood, big and Texan, so what do you think? Should this store include Clyde Drexler in his Blazers uniform, even if only a little picture?

Viajar sola tiene muchas ventajas. Una de ellas es poder andar por todos lados a mi total parecer mientras espero a que salga mi siguiente vuelo. En esta ocasion, encontre un lugar muy padre en el Aereopuerto Internacional George Bush: Clyde Drexler Sport Scene. El local esta muy bien decorado con todo tipo de posters muy padres de tamano natural de Clyde Drexler haciendo sus movimientos acrobaticos de basketbol. Lo unico que falta es una foto de Clyde en su uniforme de los Blazers. Estuve extranando terriblemente a mi marido, tratando de imaginar como estariamos pasando este rato si estuvieramos juntos. Viendo con detalle, casi pude escuchar a Mike quien de malas por alejarnos de nuestra sala de espera, como quiera seguiria caminando conmigo aunque no estuviera muy de acuerdo. Seguido trato de "pensar por el" lo cual no le gusta para nada, asi que no lo voy a hacer aqui con la excepcion de que tengo total certeza que lo que diria es preguntar como es que no se reconoce el tiempo que Clyde Drexler estuvo con los Trail Blazers. Pienso que por un lado tenemos a Clyde Drexler,  el jugador que tuvo gran exito dentro de la NBA incluyendo un Campeonato con los Portland Trail Blazers. Por otro lado tenemos a Clyde Drexler el basketbolista Tejano en el Aereopurto Internacional George Bush promoviendo todo lo que es bueno, grande y Tejano. ?Como ven? ?Creen que esta tienda deberia de incluir aunque sea una foto pequena de Clyde Drexler en su uniforme de los Blazers?
