My Career Path
My career path started 12 years ago, and these last four years at Portland State University was just one part of this process. I have been a self-employed bookkeeper since 2003, and by coming to Portland State University, I used the time opportunities given to me during the recession of 2008-2009 to complete my formal education and transform by bookkeeping services into a CPA consulting firm.  After finishing my coursework and graduating in December of 2014, I plan on continuing to study for the CPA exam and sit for them in the calendar year 2015.  Following successful completion of the four part exam and the take home ethic exam, I plan on possibly working for a small firm to fulfill the experience piece of the CPA licensing while hopefully still having the ability to work with my own clients part time.  After finishing the CPA licensing requirements, I hope to hire employees slowly as I gain new clients and make connections within the city.  I have a desire to have not only CPA conventional services available, but to offer Human Resource services to the small business community.
When I began my bookkeeping business, I noticed that not many were open to traveling to the client’s office site to do the work.  I had a niche right away as I was willing and still am willing to travel to the site where the paperwork is.  By offering Human Resource Management services with payroll, I see myself again offering a service that not many give in the accounting realm.  Since I am a Generation X card member, I hope to build a business model that will allow me to not work 60 hr/weeks much more than 10 years into the future.  After that phase is built, I plan on managing my employees more than working on the front lines, which will leave more time to network and have fun with clients and not be doing the everyday accounting forever.
By growing a business and managing employees, I see that my future is in Human Resource Management, whether I am an active public accountant or not.  Training and developing employees and those younger is a lifelong practice that no one should stop doing.  Teaching and training the young should be the goal of everyone in business.  When you learn some tangible skill, teaching it to someone else is the right thing to do so that we begin passing on this acquired knowledge before it is lost from society.

I have been living in Portland Or, for more than a decade, but this is the first time I ever get to see the Burnside bridge open while I am crossing. It was quite fun!
Me gusto mucho verlo.

Atole

Atole is one of the most delicious drinks there are. It is made of a little bit of cornstarch, milk and  decadent flavors like strawberry, pecan and coconut. You can buy them or you can make them from scratch which is tricky but thousand times better. The easiest way is making it semi-from scratch which is to add a little bit of the real thing to the store bought powder one can buy anywhere in Mexico. Tonight, we had some pecan atole. So good!

¡Bien rico!

Enchiladas/Enchiladas

This is the picture of the enchiladas I grew up loving. It is the kind of dish that will slightly change from city to city and even change a lot from state to state. In my hometown, Tulancingo, these are fresh corn tortillas slightly fried in lard or vegetable oil. Green salsa spread over the whole tortilla adding cheese, chopped onion,  shreaded chicken. Some variations may add finelly shreaded lettuce and sour cream. All over town, there's little stands outside homes where you can see the "comal" or grill with the huge frying pan steaming from all the good cooking. These are home made at our dear friend's home. What kind of enchiladas do you know and.or make?

Food/Comida

I just want to confess I am gaining weight because I'be been eating all the things I love while vacationing in my home town; no restrictions. I have been visiting friends and just cooking the yummy things I have missed dearly. One of the things I miss the most is the intensity of flavors. Everything tastes better here. I don't know if it's because I am home, where I "learned to eat", where I learned to love cooking and food, or if there is something real in the characteristics of the foods here compared to the ones in Portland, where I love now. Whatever the reason, it's just a joy. I am most of the time so busy cooking and then eating, I just forget to take pics. of my food.

A tragic and sad death. Mr. Rodolfo Torre Cantu was killed this morning. He was the candidate to governor for the PRI political party. I am sadden that this is happening in Mexico. Mexico needs all the prayer we can get.

traditional food/comida tipica

This day could probably be my gastronomical highlight of the trip. I ate the very things that are so unique in my state in the right setting: a wedding! Rice, lamb broth, lamb (which we call barbacoa) and pork. Absolutely delicious!! Of course with different salsas and cactus salad. It was heaven on this pice of earth called Santiago Tulantepec. Another great thing that happened was the fact that I could go because I am bride's relative. I was not invited and the party organizers were not at all expecting me, however that's one of the beauties of of this Mexican culture. Long gone are the days when weddings lasted three days and people were invited even from the street. However, if you are indeed a relative, you can still just show up and be welcomed with open arms. That's what I call Mexican hospitality.

The National Museum of Art, o Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City is located in this amazing building! It was finished in 1911. It was constructed by the Italian Silvio Contri. It is built in a very classical european style, specifically italian and french. This building was originally called "Communications Palace" and hosted the Ministry of Communications and Transportation. It was meant to reflect prosperity and economical stability under Porfirio Diaz's presidency. If you are someone who likes Art History, this is the place to visit. You'll love it!

Two blue frogs/Dos ranitas azules

Today, I was able to go with my nephews to their swimming lesson. I was very glad to get the chance to share with their excitement of being able to put "all their face in the water!" as they pointed out proudly. This is one of the reasons I wish I could live close to my brother, to see the little things that are so big!

Traveling alone/Viajar sola

Traveling alone has some advantages. Like being able to wander around the airport stores to my hearts' content while waiting for my connecting flight. This time I found this very cool place at G. Bush International Airport: Clyde Drexler Sports Scene. It is very sharply decorated with all kinds of full size posters featuring Clyde -- of course, doing his cool acrobatic basketball moves. The only thing that's missing is him in his Blazers uniform. As I browsed away, I was missing my husband terribly, imagining how would this walk be with him. I could almost hear Mike's words as I choose to go a little further away from our gate, he wouldn't like it, but still would tag along reluctantly. I often try to "think for him", which he hates, so I won't try except to say that I'm almost sure that the one thing he'd say about this store is how come Clyde's time with the Portland Trail Blazers is not acknowledged here. I don't know, on the one side there's the Clyde Drexler player who had great success including an NBA Championship with the Trail Blazers. On the other hand there's Clyde Drexler from Texas in the GB International Airport promoting everything that's goood, big and Texan, so what do you think? Should this store include Clyde Drexler in his Blazers uniform, even if only a little picture?

Steve Nash

Basketball is a sport I really enjoy. There are some great athletes and heroes that have made this game and each game magical and amazing. Where amazing happens. It is very true, in my opinion. That's exactly what happened in the 5th game between Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. It was literally at the last second that Ron Artest scored a basket that gave them the win. I was so sad! I just love Steve Nash! He is one player that has made watching basketball amazing. I think he deserves a championship ring. I'm just affraid this might be his last chance. I am rooting for him, even though they beat the Blazers.

¡Me dio tanta tristeza!

Reach The Beach/Alcanzando la Playa

I am so impressed with my husband Mike who rode 104 miles from Hillsboro to Pacific City last Saturday! I don't think I could ever do that. I don't know, maybe next year?

Poverty/Pobreza

I have been meditating a lot on the issue of poverty and my students. I think I had awareness about what it means. This year in particular, I have been meditating and making connections with greater detail about what that really means. Most of all, how poverty affects learning in school. It's funny, but every time I think about this, I remember the one scene in the movie The Matrix with Keanu Reaves. When Neo goes to see the Oracle for the first time, he has to wait for a few minutes in a room with some kids. One of them is "bending" spoons with his mind. The boy tells Neo: "Do not try to bend the spoon, that is impossible, only realize the truth." Neo asks: "What is the truth?" The boy replies: "There is no spoon." I suspect that somehow what this scene shows  is that I have denied poverty in my students because I want to believe with all my heart that they are all as capeable as any other kid in the school. So I started reading a book called When Poverty's Children Write, By Bobbie A. Solley. So far I have been enriched by what I've read.

Loosing the Game/Perder un Partido

What does it mean to be someone's fan? A devoted and enthusiastic follower; an ardent admirer . Then why those who consider themselves Blazers fans are so critical and harsh? After last Sunday's hard lost, many of those calling to the team's radio station the next morning wanted to fire Rudy Fernandez. They said LaMarcus Aldrige had nothing more to give. There were some crude even rude comments about these two players's performances, mostly in the second game against the Phoenix Suns. I don't understand why the callers thought everything was lost after just one game.
I think it's important that as true Blazers' fans we learn to see them as a team, not only as individual players. Throughout the whole regular season they have shown time and time again that they want to win and that when one fails, everyone fails. I don't believe it's necessary for us to stress when a player makes mistakes. I am sure that those players are harder on themselves than anyone else can. I also think it's important to remember that what they have accomplished is a great thing; considering their circumstances -- difficulties and injury's relapse they still made it to the playoffs. Loosing one playoff game does not mean loosing the series. There's up to seven games they can play. After today, they only have to win three more. That's all. There's no need to panic. They lost a battle again, but they haven't lost the war yet.

Student Life

This term, I decided to start a Reading Endorsement that way we both are studying at the same time. I'm glad to be able to study together and have very similar things to do while we're at home. We're both going to the same Univesity which an additional plus. It sure makes it easier when we both have the same amount of free time.

Bicycling

Last Saturday, I went to my first bike ride in many years. I had such a great time! I am borrowing a bike to try this out. Mike's been cycling for a while. He started participating in the "Bridge Pedal", which is a very fun anual event organized by Providence Hospital. They close one direction of all the 11 bridgesthat go over the Willamete River to all cars allowing only ciclysts and walkers on those roads for a whole morning. It's pretty cool. This will be his third year and it might possibly be my first.  I am not sure I'll be able to do this yet. The problem is not fitness, I think I can handle it pretty well, even going up and down steep roads, but the problem is the "butt" fitness. I am still sore from riding almost 12 miles last Sat and is not on my quads. I might go at it again this Sunday... I don't know

Excercise

I am writing so late because I have been going to the gym late. Since I got sick, my personal clock got messed up, so now instead if fighting it, I've decided that I'd go with it. I have been so proud of myself because I've been consistent with this I don't want to change my schedule. Plus, excercising at night is nicer than in the morning. Maybe because I get so relaxed my sleep is much more deeper.

PS Yesterday, I did go to google Julie Powell and finally met her in picture :).

H1N1

I got H1N1 the night I went tot the theater to watch Julie & Julia. After seeing the movie, which I loved because I love cooking and everything French, I was so motivated to work in consistently writing here. That night I had a 104 F temperature and all my good intentions faded away with my strength and energy. This weekend is the first one I've felt like my old self since I got sick. I must admit it hasn't been the longest I've had cold/flu symptoms. It has been the strongest symptoms I've felt, though. So, a friend suggested I needed to read the book as well. So here I am reading away. I am enjoying it but I wish I could get Amy Adams off my mind every time I read it. I wish I could see a picture of her (the real Julie Powell, so I can get my images right :).

This weekend we went to the Safeway Classic at Pumpkin Ridge. We had such a great time seeing all the different players make the game of golf seem so smooth and easy. The winner was -13 which is an amazing score. Saturday was cloudy. For a while, it rained , watching Lorena Ochoa play a good game. Unfortunately she couldn't do much. She pretty much kept her scored (-4) which didn't help her in spite of her efforts. I was so glad to follow Lorena from her start almost all the way to the 18th hole. We went back on Sunday. This time, it was sunny and hot. We followed Michelle Wie. She didn't win either, but we had the chance to sneak a few pictures of her and last years winner Cristi Kerr. They both had a big crowd following them!

Desafortunadamente no pudo hacer mucho. Seguimos a Michelle Wie.

Overcast? Cielo nublado?

These last Fall-like days have been an unexpected event after such warm sunny Summer days. It was nice to have a breather from the heat, but it's gotten a little too much, I think. It even rained yesterday! The day turned out humid and gray. I sure hope the sun will come back again. I am not ready for gray days quite yet.
